Dr. Allbaugh is originally from Waterloo, Iowa and received her DVM degree from Iowa State University in 2004. She completed a veterinary ophthalmology residency at Kansas State University and was on faculty from 2008-2011. In 2011 Dr. Allbaugh returned to Iowa and is currently an Tenured Professor at Iowa State University. Dr. Allbaugh’s passion for veterinary ophthalmology began with her childhood cat’s nearly blinding eye disease. Since that time, she has been devoted to the field, enjoying clinical practice, teaching, and research and has received numerous awards for her efforts. Dr. Allbaugh also helps to serve the profession through active participation in numerous professional organizations. In her free time, Dr. Allbaugh loves spending time with her family and friends, as well as riding her horses, playing sports, hiking, and any other outdoor activity.

Dr. Kathryn Duncan is a senior professional service veterinarian field specialist in parasitology for Merck Animal Health and an adjunct assistant professor in the Veterinary Pathobiology department at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She graduated from University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed a residency in veterinary parasitology through the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology, obtained a PhD in biomedical sciences at Oklahoma State University, and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists board-certified in parasitology. Dr. Duncan has been involved in a number of research projects and publications in companion animal parasitology, mainly focused on vector-borne diseases, ticks, and canine gastrointestinal parasites. She is a current member of various parasitology organizations such as American Heartworm Society and American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.

Temple Grandin is a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University.  Facilities she has designed for handling livestock are used by many companies around the world.  She has also been instrumental in implementing animal welfare auditing programs that are used by McDonalds, Wendy’s, Whole Foods, and other corporations. Temple has appeared on numerous TV shows such as 20/20 and Prime Time.  Her books include: Thinking in Pictures, Livestock Handling and Transport and The Autistic Brain. Her books Animals in Translation and Visual Thinking have been on the New York Times Bestseller List. Temple was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in September 2017 and in 2022 was named a Colorado State University Distinguished Professor.

Angela Gwynn

Small Animal III-Clinical Pathology/Cytology

Dr. Gwynn is a graduate of Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She completed a small animal internship at VCA Alameda in East Denver, Colorado prior to providing locum medical services for emergency and general small animal practices. After completing residency in clinical pathology at the University of Minnesota, she provided locum diagnostic clinical pathology services for a number of universities and private labs including the University of Liverpool and the digital cytology start up Lacuna Diagnostics. Dr. Gwynn is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in clinical pathology and is certified as a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. She spends the majority of her time with the hospital performing clinical diagnostics, but also enjoys teaching veterinary students, interns, and residents whenever she gets the chance. Her interests currently include higher education teaching and learning.

Rick Funston

Dr. Funston is a professor and Reproductive Physiologist at the University of Nebraska. He received his BS from North Dakota State University, MS from Montana State University his PhD from the University of Wyoming, and completed a Post Doc at Colorado State University in Reproduction/Biotechnology. He divides his time between extension and research. His research on lighter heifer development is receiving national attention/adoption; research on fetal programming effects on postnatal calf performance including carcass characteristics and reproduction has received national and international recognition; and he is a team member of nationally recognized beef systems research. In the extension capacity, he provides leadership and subject matter expertise for educational programs in cow-calf production management for the West Central District and statewide expertise in beef reproductive management programs.

Melissa King

Equine

Dr. Melissa King is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is currently an Associate Professor in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. King received her veterinary degree of Colorado State University, following graduation completed a one-year internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Following her internship Dr. King returned to northern Colorado as an equine private practitioner focusing on sports medicine. After practicing for 10 years Dr. King returned to Colorado State University to pursue a PhD in equine orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the Equine Orthopaedic Research Center. The focus of her research was to investigate the physiologic, biomechanical, and histologic effects of aquatic therapy on diminishing the progression of osteoarthritis within the equine middle carpal joint.  Dr. King’s current research interests involve the objective assessment of underwater treadmill exercise for the management of equine musculoskeletal injuries, validation of rehabilitation modalities as well as the biomechanical assessment of compensatory gait adaptations.

Jerry Stokka

Dr. Gerald L. Stokka is a member of the NDSU Animal Science faculty as Associate Professor.  His position is Extension Veterinarian/Livestock Stewardship Specialist.  This combination of positions which is 80% Extension, 20% Research is one the most unique faculty positions of any land grant university in the nation.  He has responsibilities in providing state-wide leadership to our extension system, producers, and veterinarians to be a resource for information and applied research regarding all aspects of livestock health, best practices, behavior, well-being, handling, and animal-environmental interactions, although primarily focused on the beef cattle industry.  In addition, his mission is to articulate livestock husbandry and production/sustainability practices to agriculture and non-agricultural audiences. Stokka received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from North Dakota State University and earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Iowa State University. Dr. Stokka is a partner with his brother Murray in a registered Red Angus operation.

David Twedt

Small Animal II-Internal Medicine

Dr. David C. Twedt graduated from Iowa State University and entered an internship and medicine residency in gastroenterology at The Animal Medical Center in New York City.  Dr. Hw was then on the staff at the Animal Medical Center and was also a research associate at the Liver Research Center of Albert Einstein Medical School.  Dr. Twedt is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University. Dr. Twedt is past President of the ACVIM and Comparative Gastroenterology Society and co-founder of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society.  Publication and research interests include liver, pancreatic, gastrointestinal disease and endoscopy.  He has also been the recipient of numerous awards including the Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award, WSAVA International Scientific Achievement Award, Pioneer in Endoscopy Award and ACVIM Robert W. Kirk Award for Professional Excellence. He is also the co-editor of 4 textbooks including Current Veterinary Therapy 14 and 15 editions.

Dr. Curt Vlietstra is a Professional Services Veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health. He works primarily with dairy and beef producers, veterinarians, and veterinary schools in the Midwest. Dr. Vlietstra grew up on a dairy and swine farm in northwest Iowa. He did his undergraduate work at Northwestern College and South Dakota State University and graduated from Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Curt joined Boehringer Ingelheim in 2016 after more than 13 years as a mixed-animal practitioner and practice owner in southwest Minnesota and the surrounding areas.
